The Fire Brigades Union “Ring of Fire” tour of the UK is coming to London this Friday (26 September) to highlight the devastating impact the government’s austerity agenda is having on the fire and rescue service.
The 20-day tour, which kicked off in Liverpool on 9 September, is promoting the union’s recently published report Sounding the alarm: the future of the fire and rescue service (PDF) which has found funding for the service has been cut by more than 20% during this parliament, that 5,000 frontline firefighter jobs have been cut and 999 emergency response times have increased significantly.
Along the tour, firefighters have been joined by special guests including local politicians, singers and comedians to make the event a special day out for all the family.
The London event takes place on the Thames riverside walkway on the South Bank near Gabriel’s Wharf, Bernie Spain Gardens and the London Television Centre. Entry to the event is free and it starts at 12 midday on Friday 26 September. Speakers include John McDonnell MP, Kate Hoey MP, Mark Thomas, Martin Gould SERTUC.
